There are three different levels of health
There are three different levels of health promotion, each of which requires a different educational approach for the patient, depending on which level they fall under. Primary prevention is health promotion that include preventative treatments or actions that can be done prior to illness or injury (Falkner, 2018). For primary prevention education, nurses can encourage their patient to regularly go to wellness exams, stay up to date with their vaccinations, maintain healthy eating habits, and incorporate regular exercises. At this stage of health promotion, the importance is the emphasis on creating a healthy lifestyle so the patient can increase their chances of preventing chronic diseases before it can occur. Secondary prevention is the process of catching diseases early on when they are easier to treat, and before it can progress to later stages of illness (Falkner, 2018). The main teaching that would be given to patients at this level would include educating them on getting key health screenings done. Depending on age and gender, certain screenings would be very beneficial. Some examples include getting HPV vaccinations for all girls and boys around age 12, annual gynecologic visits for women starting at age 20, breast exams every one to three years, and Pap testing every three years for women (Tuig, n.d.). Tertiary prevention is helping a patient to manage their disease that has already progressed to permanent damage, and helping them to lower their chances of comorbidities and further health complications (Falkner, 2018). Teaching for this level would include ways patients can prevent worsening symptoms, prevent reoccurrences of acute attacks, and access to helpful resources or rehabilitation programs (Falkner, 2018). For each level of prevention, the nurse must determine where the patient falls under and create an education plan that is individualized to that patient.
