Qualitative Proposal: How does transgenerational trauma affect

Qualitative Proposal: How does transgenerational trauma affect Black birthing, people’s decision making on maternal health care utilization? Problem: Experiencing personal and group racism has affected Black people for many generations. “…being black in America means living with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused not only by one’s lived experiences, but the experiences of our ancestors.” (Clemmons, 2020) These perceived racially induced traumas have created a greater diversity of barriers, which in turn impact health care utilization amongst this group of individuals. Purpose of Research: To examine the ways transgenerational trauma affects Black birthing, people’s decision making on maternal health care utilization; such as their choice of perinatal health care. Measurement/Instrument: I will create a survey and interview script that specifically identify racially induced trauma responses. The survey will find individuals that fall into the specific criteria needed, those individuals that self-identify as a Black person, U.S. resident, 34 > weeks pregnant or 3 months postpartum, and ages range between 20 – 35 years. The survey will be given in-person and online. There will be a mix of different type of questions for ex. Yes or no, rank order, multiple choice, ect. The survey should take 15 – 20 minutes, a team of two to three people will interpret the data, collect consents, schedule interviews, ect. I will also use structured interviews – Participants will be interviewed to share their personal experience. Using the surveys collected the interviewer (knowledgeable about racial induce trauma) with ask questions to further understand the decision making in regards to birth choices. The interviewers should be black women with deep understanding in racial induced trauma and should take about 60-90 mins in the same place, somewhere clean and comfortable. There will be a structured interview script to follow by interviewers. With this research being based on personal experience and racial induce trauma, it is interpretive based on the individual data collection will be structured to ensure viability and reliability. To avoid measurement error the survey will calculate a score based on how many questions where that suggest trauma has been experienced. Participated will not be selected to participate unless they score high enough. The interviews will be transcribed and recorded to avoid misunderstanding and interviews will be reviewed by a group of individuals to ensure no basis in data collection.
