Problem: There is limited data on MTA passengers’ knowledge of services provided by midwives in NYC. Purpose: To determine the current knowledge of MTA passengers regarding services provided by midwives in NYC and evaluate the effectiveness of targeted subway ads on MTA passengers’ knowledge of services provided by midwives in NYC. Questions: What is the current level of MTA passengers’ knowledge regarding services provided by midwives in NYC? How do targeted subway ads affect MTA passengers’ knowledge of services provided by midwives in NYC? Instruments This study will utilize a self-selected, pre- and post-test formatted survey to gather primary research data. The survey consists of ten yes-or-no questions about services provided by midwives in NYC. The correct answer to each of the ten questions is “Yes.” Midwives in NYC can provide specialist referrals. Midwives in NYC can admit to and discharge from the hospital. Midwives in NYC can order and interpret lab tests. Midwives in NYC can draw blood and insert IVs. Midwives in NYC can prescribe medications and medical devices. Midwives in NYC can provide annual exams, including gynecological care, primary care, health screening and counseling, family planning, and adolescent care. Midwives in NYC can provide counseling and care during and after menopause. Midwives in NYC can provide comprehensive obstetric care, including prenatal, labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care. Midwives in NYC can provide birth control. Midwives in NYC have at least a master’s degree in their field and must maintain a license from a national board. Paper copies of this survey will be handed out on trains. The paper copies, as well as T-shirts worn by researchers, will have a QR code that will bring participants to a digital copy of the same survey. The other key component of this study is the ad campaign. Ads will consist of a brightly-colored graphic to grab attention and text that reads: “DID YOU KNOW? Midwives in New York City can provide [the ten services included in the surveys as a bulleted list] Visit nycmidwives.org/for-the-public/ to see if a midwife is right for you!” Validity The statistical validity will be evaluated based on the data collected. From the responses to the surveys, we will be able to determine statistical significance and calculate the margin of error. From my perspective, there is face validity that this is an appropriate measure for this study. Since I am not yet an expert in this field, it may be wise to consult an expert in a field like advertising that could help validate the tools I’m using. I believe the content validity is appropriate to these specific research questions, because the questions include the services provided by midwives in NYC as per the state of New York, but it could be argued that it’s not possible to fully encapsulate the impact of midwifery services in a brief survey. Reliability The data collected will be assessed for stability and accuracy by calculating the reliability coefficient.
