To continue, I will discuss the similarities and differences between a lobbyist and an advocate. Going into detail about the two, I will also discuss the importance of both within the healthcare field and how my chosen organization, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality lobby or advocate for healthcare policies. To begin, an advocate is someone who advances the interests of another, according to the dictionary. To be an advocate in the nursing field is to uphold human dignity, advance patient equality, and end suffering. Additionally, the right of patients to make decisions regarding their own health must be upheld (Jessani et al, 2022). On the other hand, a lobbyist is a person who engages in a concerted effort to sway lawmakers (Keegan, 2023). The distinction between advocacy and lobbying is that being a lobbyist is a form of advocacy focused on persuading a politician. A more generic phrase for activism on favor of a cause is “advocacy.” Non-profit groups are not permitted to lobby, but any individual may send a letter to a politician on their own letterhead (Jessani et al, 2022). Both a lobbyist and advocate are important in any organization because it helps push that organization and the people involved to succeed. If there were neither a lobbyist nor an advocate, there would not be much progress within these organizations. An example of an organization who is an advocate is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. This organization advocates for patient’s safety as well as staff safety by research and creating tools that different organizations can use. In conclusion, both advocacy and lobbyists are important within any organization. They allow for progress to be made within organization to be successful.
