Post a thoughtful response to a colleagues’ initial postings. Responses to colleagues should be supportive and helpful (examples of an acceptable comment are: “This is interesting – in my practice, we treated or resolved (diagnosis or issue) with (x, y, z meds, theory, management principle) and according to the literature…” and add supportive reference. Avoid comments such as “I agree” or “good comment.” Minimum of one (1) total reference: one (1) from peer-reviewed or course materials reference per response Please reference your response with your response with no later than 5 years and link to doi article In this post we will discuss health care policy and its relation to access, equity, quality, and cost. I will discuss what health care reform means to the uninsured and underinsured and the implications of limited access to certain populations while looking at how nursing can help provide awareness of civil rights in health care. Health care policy can be a complicated thing and delivering health care that adequately meets the needs of a diverse public is a complex challenge (Mason et.al, 2021). The ability and access of health care to the world can differ based the individual’s health care coverage and resources available. Those in low-income areas many do not get the access to health services that those of high-income regions leading to inequality of care being afforded. According to Healthy People 2020, access to quality health care encompasses the ability to enter the health care system through health insurance, geographic availability, and access to a health care provider and has been defined as “the degree to which health care services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge (Flaubert et. al, 2021). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ACA enacted in March of 2010 is a current health care reform that allows individuals the ability to obtain more affordable health insurance, lowering the cost of coverage and expanding the area of coverage to lower income citizens. This act is a great start to get us to where we need to be. Limited access and resources in health care still exists today but health care reform can help bridge this gap through improving quality and increasing access as shown with the ACA of 2010. The limited access of health care to vulnerable populations will lead to health care services not performed, limited resources available leading to an increase of illness and ultimately more preventable deaths. The U.S. population will not fully thrive unless all individuals can live their healthiest lives, regardless of their income, their race or ethnicity, or where they live (Flaubert et.al, 2021). Nurses are integral in bringing civil rights to the forefront of health care. Nurses play a crucial role in the robust, interdisciplinary, public health workforce charged with assuring the health of the public (Mason et.al, 2021). Nurses can advocate for their patients through helping to develop and influence policies and contributing to continued reform. Nurses are charged with delivering quality patient centered care to all patients regardless of race or culture and can help set the tone of improving care to all communities. In conclusion, the United States has come a long way over the last several decades but continued improvements and development needs to take place to provide best care to all populations regardless of income, race, age, education and culture. Nurses are well positioned to contribute, lead, and improve efforts of the ever-changing U.S health care system (Mason et.al, 2021). We need to come together as a nation to help allow all citizens to receive the best quality of care available. References Flaubert, J., Le Menestrel, S., & Williams, D.
