According to our textbook, “Quantitative research is a traditional approach to research in which variables are identified and measured in a reliable and valid way” (Houser, 2021, p. 36). So, for example this type of information from research can be used as data such as attitudes, opinions, behaviors, or choices to discover patterns. When trying to remember quantitative, I remember this by the “n” for NUMBER. “Qualitative research is a naturalistic approach to research in which the focus on understanding the meaning of an experience from the individual’s perspective (Houser, 2021, p.34). Qualitative is more focused on the actual quality and analyzes from an individual’s perspective. Experimental design is tests for “cause and effect” and requires high level of control, rigorous sampling of subject groups (Week 4 Lesson, n.d.). I found this to be the most interesting for this weeks information and lesson. While it states this option is not generally utilized in nursing studies it could be beneficial because they typically have three primary characteristics regarding control, manipulation, and randomization. My PICOT assignment was based around Surgical Site Infection. My clinical nursing priority problem was reducing surgical site infections with skin bundles. The comparison being patients who receive pre-operative care. “A multivariate analysis suggested that the most important bundle components contributing to the prevention of colon procedure SSI were (1) use of appropriate skin prep, (2) use of a wound protector and (3) OR staff glove change before closure of fascia” (Reese, et al., 2020). You could use different variables with the treatment (experimental group) and the other without (control group) to see if it’s successful with the skin bundles. Using a quantitative research method such as experimental design would utilize the cause and effect for the outcome. This is most helpful with seeing if “interventions” are successful – such as the skin bundles in the research.
