I work in Gastroenterology where it seems some patients are fully engaged and proactive with their diagnosis, treatment and management. Other patients seem to be lacking in their knowledge and understanding of their diagnosis. I feel it is important from a clinical perspective to provide more education and follow up with these patients. The condition of this disease “is thought to be provoked by a combination of genetics, dietary and environmental exposures, immune changes, and an abnormal balance of gut bacteria (Sandefur et al., 2019, p. 1). Treatment and management of this chronic disease is not as simple as a medication. It requires education about preventative measures such as nutritional changes, smoking cessation or avoiding smoking, regular follow up appointments and labs to help monitor symptoms for exacerbation of the disease process and maintain periods of remission (Snyder et al., 2021). The medications for an IBD diagnosis also require diligent follow through and adherence. Some medications used to treat IBD such as Remicade, Humira, Entyvio along with others are administered via an injection or infusion. The timeline for these treatments are specific. Some require blood work before and after receiving the medication. Most of the providers and staff at my workplace are organized and follow good practices to ensure these patients are keeping up with their plan of care. The patients who require a little more follow up due to not having a clear understanding of their diagnosis and/or lack of support and resources to assist them with follow up care, etc. and who desire to care for themselves and feel well, versus patients who are non-compliant, I feel it is important to establish interventions to help them understand and coordinate the most appropriate treatment for them. Lee et al. (2021) defines health literacy as “the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, understand, and communicate about health-related information needed to make informed health decisions.” Literacy with online information is helpful to provide explanations for the particular diagnosis for an IBD patient. Whether the patient has Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or other chronic GI symptoms there are many websites that provide explanations for each disease process and related symptoms. The websites also provide information on the causes of IBD, medications and other treatments. Some websites also have quizzes to help determine if an individual may have IBD. Information regarding health on the internet is extraordinary. A majority of people who have access to the internet have used it to find information on various topics of health. The quality of this information however, is not always reliable or accurate. Hebda & Czar, 2013 provides a summary of criteria to evaluate the quality of health information on a website. These criteria include source credentials, validation of information, accuracy, comprehensive, date(s) indication when the information was written or revised, sponsorship or bias, is the content on the website easy to navigate, defines the audience, includes a disclaimer, shows evidence for accreditation for quality information (93-94). The National Library of Medicine website provides links to PubMed and MedlinePlus. PubMed utilizes MEDLINE to offers journal and publications on biomedical literature. MedlinePlus has current information on wellness and disease (National Library of Medicine – National Institutes of Health, n.d.) References: Hebda, T. L., & Czar, P. (2013).
