Eugenicists have supported selective breeding to reach these goals. With technological advances today, we can more directly change the genetic composition of an individual. Nonetheless, people differ in their points of views on how to best and ethically use this type of technology (Pence, 2021). I picked a scientific practice related to genetics and eugenics: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). IVF is an assisted reproductive technology. This process is done by extracting eggs, retrieving sperm samples, and then manually mixing the two together in a lab. The embryo would then be transferred into the uterus (IVF, 2019). Patients can turn to IVF for various reasons such as unexplained infertility, genetic disorders, and blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. The process of IVF is often used with people who are unable to get pregnant on their own. I completely agree with In Vitro Fertilization and have had several friends and family members who have gone through this process. It can be completely demoralizing to a couple to continue to keep trying to conceive naturally on their own without any luck. After years of continuously trying, this can take a toll on a person. I think IVF is completely justifiable and is a wonderful option for couples who are having a hard time conceiving on their own. References:
