Yes. The authors used descriptive and inferential statistics to test their hypothesis of whether students would score similarly irrespective of the pedagogy employed. Further, “the method of equivalence intervals was used to demonstrate similarities between the groups” (Harrington, et al., 2015). Neither group outperformed the other. The use of equivalence intervals was appropriate to demonstrate the lack of difference between the two groups. Descriptive statistics was appropriate given the academic exams were scored in percentages as well. Likewise, the use of inferential statistics strengthened the probability of the hypothesis as “researchers use inferential statistics to make inferences about a population” (Polit & Beck, 2021, p.366). Were parametric tests used and do they appear to be appropriate? The parametric test used was the t- test and this was appropriate. The t-test was appropriate given the two groups of students who were administered exams at regular intervals. Were the results of any statistical test significant and what did the tests tell you about the plausibility of the research hypothesis? Despite multiple measurements ( 3 exams, 24 quizzes, and 1 written paper) student’s scores were similar without any statistically significant differences between traditional classroom and flipped classroom style. These results suggest the hypothesis was valid and that both learning environments are effective. Students were able to successfully demonstrate subject mastery as evidenced by their grades. Could anything have been done differently with this research topic? If I were conducting this research, I would have included a qualitative analysis as well. Since these were second semester students who had previously been taught in a traditional pedagogy, they would be capable of discerning between the different teaching methods. A carefully constructed questionnaire would provide further insight into the student’s perspective regarding this new approach. Inverted curriculum is not a new methodology. In fact, it is used consistently and quite successfully in career and technical education schools. As it pertains to nursing students it is well known that these students enter nursing programs with above average grades and are highly motivated students. If the group did not find this particular teaching style effective, I do not think it would have been statistically evident in the grading in one semester. These students are typically high achieving independent of their instructor’s effectiveness. Hagan (2014) suggests research is affected by how the sample responds to the instruments applied in the study. Teaching incorporates the unmeasurable human element as an instrument. While I appreciate the authors attempt to quantify their findings statistically, utilizing nursing students incorporates a specific bias by use of “sample imbalance” and thus distorts the studies finding. As stated ” a bias is an influence that produces a distortion or error. Bias can threaten the studies validity and trustworthiness and is a major concern in designing a study” (Polit & Beck, 2021, p.154). References Hagan, T. L. (2014).
