(2016) set out to describe different coping mechanisms for moral distress that was felt by staff in oncology practice settings. The first author conducted interviews with a variety of physicians and nurses about moral distress and coping. An initial evaluation of the 10 most in depth interviews was conducted by three of the authors to elucidate themes. These themes were then used to evaluate the rest of the interviews. The interviews were open coded by the first author then the results were reviewed by all of the researchers to validate the findings. This appears to be a reasonable way to handle this type of data due to the nature of the study. Common themes about how distress was handled were found and organized into a schema that compiled the themes into a practical format (Lievrouw et al., 2016). Lievrouw et al. (2016) used only manual methods to evaluate the data in this study. A software program was used to transcribe the interviews but coding was done by the authors, it would seem, without assistance of a computer program (Lievrouw et al., 2016). The context of the noted phenomena was clear. The work experience and job location for each interviewee was described; this leads the reader to see the coping styles and characteristics of each individual when viewed on Figure 1 on page 508 (Lievrouw et al., 2016). As I read the article, I could easily pick out co-workers of my own who would fit into each category, though this may be because I work in the oncology setting just as the subjects in this study do. I could even hear echoes of my co-workers in some of the quotes in the article. I think that giving some sample questions that the interviewees were asked would have been helpful. I feel that the authors did a good job of developing their sample population, despite the sample being heavy on the female side with almost two females for every male participant, though this is likely due to the lack of male nurses available for sampling. I also would have liked to see some examples of what situations caused the subjects to experience moral distress. It is possible that certain topics or events are common causes for moral distress and this may influence the coping mechanism used by staff for that situation. I agree that further research about education level and coping style would be beneficial as well (Lievrouw et al., 2016).
