Please help me respond to this post with citation. The implementation of health information systems (HIT) requires time, planning, maintenance, and change. The goal of usability in informatics is to create a health information system that is “effective, efficient and satisfying to use” (Hebda et al., 2018, p. 167). It is important for certain usability techniques to be implemented to promote HIT, which if designed appropriately “can improve individuals’ performance to increase patient safety, reduce errors, increase productivity, and improve cognitive support” (Hebda et al., 2018, p. 168). Two factors that are critical to the successful implementation of health information systems are human-computer interaction (HCI) and human factors. An article by Carayon & Hoonakker (2019) discusses the “impact on key care process and patient outcomes” through the incorporation of human factors in the HIT design process (74). Research has shown challenges with HCI through clinician’s frustration with initial implementation and use of program such as electronic health records (EHR). An article by Opoku-Boateng (2015) discusses three phases of frustration a clinician may experience through HCI. Pre-experience, inter-experience and post-experience phases identify the clinician’s knowledge and stress prior to the use of the HIT, their feelings as they encounter frustration in the midst of using HIT and finally their end goal perceptions about continuing to use the HIT, giving up or getting past their frustration to ask for help in how to utilize the system in an effective way. How can human factors be assessed to determine a clinician’s knowledge and understanding of an already established HIT and how to apply that knowledge when there are changes and/or updates in a new HIT?
