Often, all an expecting family wants in

Often, all an expecting family wants in a baby is for them to be healthy. As a nurse, it is important to understand low birth weight (LBW) babies and their effect on families in the short and long run, as well as the possibilities that come with the baby’s care and health. Pregnant people according to Green in 2022 are more likely to give birth to children with a low birth weight if they are exposed to environmental hazards such as cigarette smoke. Prenatal care and education are especially important in groups where these hazards are possible and all exposure should be stopped or very limited if unavoidable. Childbearing people are more likely to be exposed to said hazards within diverse and underdeveloped ethnic and cultural groups as these groups tend to have occupations that are readily exposed to said hazards. Because the care of a premature child often creates obstacles in care, families with premature babies often face impacts in terms of finances, family, and caretaker burden. The CDC has a large amount of information available pertaining to premature birth and the possible effects such as brain bleeds, digestive issues, developmental delay, etcetera (2022). A resource available for those who have premature babies is Hand to Hold an organizational nonprofit dedicated to emotional support and educational and community resources for families in need of them (https://handtohold.org/). A nurse should be prepared to answer any questions or requests for resources or information when it comes to the health of a premature or low birth weight baby and if unable to present information or resources, understand and know where to retrieve said information or resources.
