Nursing1158 Professional Growth and Development – Academic Paper Instructions and Rubric This assignment facilitates the students’ beginning understanding of the importance of developing and maintaining a professional image in their face-to-face interactions and online. In addition, students will begin to develop their academic writing skills. The purpose of this assignment is to introduce students to the images and actions of nurses in the popular media and help students understand a) how these images and actions may or may not reflect the required actions and behaviors required by nurses in Ontario according to the CNO Standards andGuidelines,b) how these images and actions may influence the public’s perception of nurses, andc) how these images and actions may affect a nursing’s students understanding of professional identity. This academic paper will be 1500-2000 words in length (not including title page and references page). Students must not go over the 2000 words limit. Activity To prepare for the assignment, FIRST students must find a recent (last 5 years) story about a nurse or nurses in the popular media. The nurses must be interacting with patients. Popular media includes news articles, magazine articles, movies, TV shows, Facebook, etc. The story that you choose must show or discuss the nurse or nurses doing some action or behaviour. This assignment is NOT about the absence of nurses in a situation, or what others are saying about nurses, or about doctors and what they are doing. This assignment is about nurses. Many television shows and movies, new and old, are streaming now. If you choose a movie or a television show, please ensure that it’s about nursing in the last 5 years….notnursing years or decades ago. Third, students will think about the media example that they chose. Students will describe how the chosen example makes you feel about your future profession. and describe how the chosen example makes you feel about being a nurse in the future.
