Reflective Practice Analysis Look Back I was hired to look after Mr. C, an 80-year-old man with diabetes and high blood pressure who lives alone in a two-story house. Every morning and evening, he must do a finger stick and then take his insulin. It was my first time caring for a diabetic and having to watch them inject insulin. Elaborate Mr. C’s health was declining, and he forgets to take his medications and insulin on occasion, so his daughter requested additional help at home. The first morning I went to Mr. C’s house, I introduced myself and I explained that I was there to assist him with his daily activities and to ensure that he took his medications. Mr. C has always been a self-sufficient individual who was unaccustomed to having someone in his home. He stated that he normally does everything himself and does not require assistance. I felt a little nervous and unsure of what to say. While he was watching the weather channel, I took a step back and observed what he was doing before striking up a conversation with him about the weather. I also noticed that he could do his finger stick but had difficulty with the insulin, so he put it back in the fridge. His curtain was closed, his kitchen was disorganised, and dirty dishes were in the sink, the living room was untidy, and there was a smell of urine. Among other things Mr. C was in his pyjamas, which looked dirty and worn. His bed was neatly made as though he hadn’t slept in it in days. I felt a little more at ease once I started talking to him since he started to open up a bit. We talk about the weather, his family, and sports for a bit. After approximately 30 minutes of talking, he decided to accept my assistance, which made me happy. Analyze Mr. C’s behaviour was attributable to the ageing process. He can no longer does the things he used to does on his own, which makes him angry because he’s losing his independence (Goodway et al, 2021). Mr. C now requires assistance with his basic needs from a caregiver or family. Mr. C, according to Henderson’s basic need theory, requires someone to assist him, partner with him, and occasionally substitute in for him (Durrant, 2022, slide 14). I was getting to know Mr. C, his likes and dislikes, and building a trusting relationship with him by having a conversation with him. I was able to assist Mr. C with his basic needs daily, allowing him to maintain as much independence as possible. According to Henderson, there are several basic needs that a person requires assistance with in order to achieve independence (Durrant, 2022, slide 14). Mr. C’s grooming needs, meals, range of motion exercises, maintaining a clean environment, and promoting safety while at home were all met while I was providing assistance daily. Revise In future revisions, I will try to obtain more information on the client before approaching him. Knowing what he likes and dislikes, as well as the fact that he was unwilling to accept help, would have guided my approach and lowered my nervousness. According to Goodway et al., 2021, as one gets older, one’s ability to a task change, limiting what an older adult can and cannot . As time goes by, Mr. C had become accustomed to my help and was more willing to accept it while still trying to remain independence. Mr. C now recognises that he needs additional support to his ADLs, and we collaborated for several weeks before his death to keep him as independent as possible. New Perspective Before offering any assistance, I believe it is important to get to know the client. It’s also crucial to gain some understanding about how to care for diabetic patients. Throughout the process, I learn that nursing is more than a skill; it is an art (Potter et al. 2019). This experience has taught me to always be prepared when going to see a new client and prior to going, I learned that I needed to some research on the patient diagnosis. In the future, prior to going to see a customer, I will make sure I know a little more about them and some research on how to best assist them. I’ll also try to find ways to engage in meaningful conversation while caring for or supporting people so that I’m not left speechless for long periods of time. I believe this was a valuable learning experience for me and has taught me a lot. Durrant, M. (2022). PNR100: Nursing Theorists The Caring Experience [PowerPoint slides].
