I need help explaining the kind of method(s) used for this interview. I am doing a MOC Research project Interview 1: Gender? Female Age? 81 Ethnicity? White Are you comfortable conducting the interview in English? Yes Researcher: How long were you in hospital? Participant 1: I was in the hospital for 8 days. Researcher: Have you had to go back to the hospital after leaving? Participant 1: I had a few appointments with my doctor but that was it Researcher: Why did you have to stay at the hospital? Participant 1: My legs had this cut that I got from gardening and it didn’t heal. My doctor said it was diabetes but I have no idea why my sugars make healing harder Anyway, the cut I got on my right leg ended up getting infected so I had to go into the hospital Researcher: Can you tell us about your experience in hospital? Participant 1: Well you know you’re really sick when you have to go to the hospital. When I was young, if you had a sniffle you’d go, but now, you basically need to be on your death bed. So yea, I wasn’t feeling well at all so that was no good. But what was nice about it was that I had a window overlooking the park and I liked that. Most of the people working were nice too. But the food, the food. I enjoy a good meal, but I got none of that there. Researcher: Can you tell us about your social life while in hospital? (Visitors, phone calls, emails, etc.) Participant 1: Well, I guess it wasn’t all bad. My neighbor came to visit, he’s a nice fellow and we work on our gardens together. My kids came every day and my grand kids stopped by on the weekend and once after school too. Researcher: Can you tell us about the staff? Participant 1: Oh they were good. I thought they all worked so hard. I would hear these bells and stuff, but the workers always want to help. I really thought the person who brought my meal tray everyday was so sweet. She always said hello. The nurses were nice, now I like to read before bed so I did that and in the evening sometimes a nurse would come and ask about my book and we would have nice chats. Researcher: Did you establish any bonds with staff? Participant 1: I did. There was one young nurse, Sara I think her name was. She was really nice. She worked two day shifts and two night shifts and ended up showing up the day I left. She was the nurse I told you about who always asked about my book. She has two kids and we would talk about my books and about my garden. She made me feel comfortable too. With my infection the worst when I showed up, the first few days it hurt to walk so much, but she was gentle and helped me walk to the bathroom. My grand kids made cards for her as a thank you when I went home. Researcher: Can you tell us about a memorable experience with any of the staff at the hospital? Participant 1: Well one of my hardest nights at the beginning, I needed to get up to go to the bathroom. I have a bedtime routine and I could barely walk. The nurse that night wasn’t very patient. She keep telling me to hurry up and I didn’t get a chance to finish up putting my night cream on. But the next night, Sara was there and she was wonderful. She was helpful. She got me a chair and when I told her I was trying to be fast, she told me I could take your time. After I finished she helped me back to my bed and fixed my pillows. It was so kind. Researcher: Is there anything else you would like us to know about your experience in hospital? Participant 1: I can’t think of anything. Researcher: How do you think your relationship with the nurses influenced your stay? Participant 1: It made a big difference. I found the days when I had nurses that I liked, my days were better. The best days were with Sara.
