Help to reply to the post below: I would implement a policy where there would be guaranteed breaks for nurses, with a specific break for nurses. I would choose this because I believe taking breaks and stepping away from patient care allows nurses to come back with fresh eyes and be more compassionate. I have worked for 1.5 years and probably have had less than 5 covered breaks. I rarely see other nurses taking breaks. Taking breaks has been shown to reduce burnout and emotional exhaustion (Cordoza et al., 2018). Reducing the emotional burden and reducing burnout could improve patient care and even possibly reduce staff turnover, which would improve staffing. Safe nurse-to-patient ratios improve patient care. I would first ensure that there was a designated relief nurse on each unit that could cover nurses on their break so that one nurse would not have to cover their own personal patients plus another nurse’s patients and end up with 10 patients, as this is very unsafe. The staff would have to have designated break times for the designated nurse to be able to cover everyone in a reasonable amount of time.
