Hello, Topic focused: Identify your specialty area
Hello, Topic focused: Identify your specialty area of NP practice. Select a nursing theory, borrowed theory, or interdisciplinary theory provided in the lesson plan or one of your own findings. Address the following: Origin Meaning and scope Logical adequacy Usefulness and simplicity Generalizability Testability Finally, provide an example how the theory could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in your specific setting. What rationale can you provide that validates the theory as applicable to the role of the nurse practitioner. In my pursuit of the Family Nurse Practitioner track, my ultimate aim is to contribute to primary care. To explore this further, I have chosen Pender’s Health Promotion theory. Developed by Nola Pender from the University of Michigan, this theory made its appearance in nursing literature around 1982 and underwent revisions in the 1990s to align with new theoretical perspectives (Pender, 2011). The crux of this theory lies in identifying patient behaviors that have an impact on their health. Moreover, it outlines eight beliefs that nurses can evaluate and employ to promote healthier behaviors. By encouraging better health behaviors, we can pave the way for improved health outcomes and a more wholesome lifestyle (Pender, 2011). Although primarily intended for nurses, this theory can be embraced by other healthcare professionals as well, broadening its applicability beyond the nursing realm. The theory’s logical adequacy stems from its consideration of the patient and their health behaviors in relation to health promotion. Health promotion involves the implementation of strategies at all levels to enhance knowledge and attitudes towards health, leading to healthier lifestyles. This is often achieved through education at the primary care level. Health behaviors refer to activities that maintain or improve health and prevent serious health issues. As nurses, we can promote better health and healthier lifestyles by assessing and intervening on our clients’ health behaviors. This theory is particularly useful in primary care settings where patients frequently interact with their primary caregivers. As the most familiar healthcare providers to our clients, we are well-positioned to identify their health risks and encourage health promotion using this theory. Moreover, the theory is easy to understand, with clear guidelines on the specific beliefs or behaviors that require assessment. As a future nurse practitioner, I possess the skills to critically evaluate and utilize available resources in order to implement interventions that assist my patients in improving their health behaviors. According to our weekly reading, this model is frequently utilized in research, making it applicable to a wide range of diagnoses. Nurses can also apply this model to diverse patient populations due to its incorporation of various characteristics (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Furthermore, its extensive use in research suggests that it is highly testable. If the client follows the recommended behavior changes identified by the nurse, a researcher can determine whether there is an improvement in health and assess the effectiveness of the theory. Our weekly reading highlights the model’s widespread use in research, indicating its generalizability. This model proves valuable in addressing numerous diagnoses across the board, making it applicable for nurses working with diverse patient populations. Its comprehensive approach, accounting for various characteristics, further enhances its usefulness. Additionally, its frequent use in research suggests that it is highly testable. By monitoring changes in patients behaviors, researchers can evaluate improvements in health and the theory’s effectiveness. References Kosali, S., Aparna, S., Cawley, J. (2017).
