Describe ageism and its impact on societal views of older adult clients. Ageism is when someone is judged based off their age. This can be a positive, bias, prejudice, or discriminatory. This can cause society to view elderly as weak or unable to manage regular daily actives. Especially with all the new technology, we assume the older adult can not understand how to use these new thing; however some older adults are quit inclined with the use of technology. Explain how ageism can influence the healthcare provisions of older adult clients. With a older adult client they may be treated poorly due to the misconception of the older adult with ageism such as “they wont remember this in 5 mins”. Age also affects treatment; such as, an 90 year old needing surgery most will not approve or consider due to the age without even seeing imagining or labs. The older adult may also not get thoroughly explained the procedures/medications/and diagnosis they are given. As a healthcare provider, how can one best assess and confront attitudes, perceptions, behaviors, and biases toward older adults? It is always best to assess based off of how the client is presenting, the diagnosis, the vitals, the clients feeling and thoughts. Never done an assessment based solely off age.
