“Complexity is associated with the intricate inter-twining

“Complexity is associated with the intricate inter-twining or inter-connectivity of elements within a system and between a system and its environment” (Chan, 2001, p. 1). Complex science in of itself complexes the mind. Attempting to conceptualize its constructs and concepts as they apply to everyday experiences, can leave us questioning its value. However, and more simply put, everything around us is comprised of dynamic interactions, inter-connectivity (brains, immune systems, ecologies, societies) that generate structures (p.123). Complex adaptive systems (CAS) emerge dynamic systems able to adapt in and evolve with a changing environment. The mysteries of the universe (abstract) are too complex for us to fathom, but in the intricate care of patients and the dynamics of diseases, nurses seek to ensure positive patient outcomes in the midst of the complexities. Unconsciously, nurses are actively a part of CAS, and actively engaged in diminishing complexity through interprofessional collaboration, incorporation of policies and procedures in patient care, and use of Root Cause Analyses Links to an external site.(RCA Links to an external site.) and Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analyses Links to an external site.(FMECA Links to an external site.) to understand how complexity can result in negative outcomes. The theoretical premises of complex science becomes less complex when we view its application through the lens of our practice in which we adapt in and evolve with a changing environment. CAS Concepts from Butts and Rich (2022) Components Agents Patterns Characteristics CASs feature connectively CASs are dynamic and adaptive Simple rules allow CASs to function Emergence is a property of CAS CASs are self-organizing Control is distributed rather than centralized Diversity maximizes self-organized CASs are deterministic CASs are exemplified by embeddedness (i.e. a CAS may be nested within a larger CAS) Coordination dynamics occur within a CAS CASs are sensitive to initial conditions Coevolution occurs with a CAS CASs are robust and adaptable Examine the characteristics of CAS in Butts and Rich (2022) Listed ABOVE Without getting lost in the concepts, describe a clinical, leadership, or organizational event in which some of the CAS concepts clearly defined the situation. What was the outcome? In other words, how did those individuals involved adapt and evolve? Or how did the situation remain unstable? Reference: Butts, J. B., & Rich, K. L. (2022).
