Comment on this post Promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in patients is some of the benefits of using a holistic approach in assessments. It can help with some of the struggles a patient may face, like helping to resolve emotional issues. For verbal, I will speak in a relaxed tone and be sure to answer them appropriately. I will incorporate non-verbal cues by showing confidence in my posture; depending on cultural preferences, I will have eye contact with my patient, be aware of my facial expression/body language, and be mindful of certain gestures (Cooks-Campbell, 2023).Some barriers I can think of are language barriers, a person who is in pain/distress, and a patient who just is not comfortable with interactions, period. For example, I do many assessments; once, I had to assess a person coming in for detox. This individual was in active withdrawal and refused to partake in the assessment because he was going through all the motions. I had to take extra time and try to ease some of his symptoms to complete the assessment. I found myself doing much reassuring, making them aware that they would get what they needed on the unit if we could make it through the assessment first. I had to put myself in their shoes while also understanding that I needed to complete their medical screening before we could move forward. One example of how holistic assessment impacts patient outcomes is when the patient can help with gaining information essential for their diagnosis, are involved in their planning and treatment process.
