Comment on the post The usefulness of a holistic assessment is beneficial for a patient’s individual needs. It is useful because it focuses on a patient’s overall health, including physical, psychological, social, and spiritual wellbeing (Mills, 2019). I will be able to obtain subjective and objective date for a patient and collect a better history in order to give a better quality of care. Using verbal and non-verbal techniques I will be able to observe how a patient is feeling based off their facial expression and help develop trust. Using such gestures, I am also able to show compassion and obtain a better data from my patient. With a holistic approach, patients will feel centered because aside from focusing on their medical needs, we also about their cultural and religious needs. Holistic nursing also improves a patient’s healthcare because he/she is able to address any concerns, whether its medical, behavioral, or social and this will lead to a better health outcome (Mills, 2019). However, a time a holistic approach has been challenging for me is due to language barriers. An example I have is when I am doing prenatal interviews to my non-English speaking patients. I can sometimes tell that some ladies feel uncomfortable using the language line or using an interpreter. I feel at times they are embarrassed using a third-party language and do not give me their full prenatal history or concerns. I also feel like I am not able to show individualized concern to my patients because of the use of an extra person. Also, many patients like to bring their husbands to translate, but I still have to use the language line and I address the importance that husband’s may not answer any questions. This is because using an interpreter third party can become a HIPPA violation, this issue can make the patient and her husband upset at times. SCIENCE
