Case Study: Alvin Young: 65 y.o. – healthy, no medical issues, previously declined COVID vaccine. Mary Young: 58 y.o. with HTN, prediabetes, dyslipidemia but controlled by meds, also declined COVID vaccine. Two weeks ago, Mr. and Mrs. Young were visiting Mr. Young’s 85 y.o. uncle in Florida. The uncle had late-stage cancer, developed a cough and SOB during the time of the Youngs’ visit. Uncle was then admitted to ICU and later died in the hospital. Family still waiting to find out the cause of death. After staying in Florida for 1 week, Mr. and Mrs. Young returned home. On their flight back to California, Mr. Young developed a cough and stuffy nose but no other symptoms. Two days later, Mrs. Young also developed a cough, headache, and fever of 101. Today (a week after returning home and two weeks since the Florida visit), Mr. and Mrs. Young still have a productive cough and occasional headaches. Both Mr. & Mrs. Young are increasingly concerned about their possible exposure while visiting their uncle and being on the plane. They emailed you, their clinician, with the following questions: Do we need to self-quarantine since neither of us have a fever now? Why? Do we need to get a COVID test and why? If so, which test: COVID antibody or antigen? Should we still get the COVID vaccines if we tested positive for COVID? Why? If so, when should we get the vaccines?
