Can you summarize the information below listing 3 important points from the content? It may come as no surprise that our country is currently facing a nursing shortage. It is important to look at the contributing factors within the nursing shortage to better understand the problem this country is facing. Nurses play a crucial role in the care of the sick, injured, and those seeking medical attention. With the demands that nurses face daily, it is extremely common for a nurse to experience burnout. The role that nurses have caring for patient’s hours on end can take its toll, especially if there are other contributing factors at play. It is common for a nurse to experience more than one factor besides the heavier patient load. Family life, personal issues and the current global issues can all take a toll. In addition, there is also a growing population of nurses that are nearing retirement, making a need for new nurses. If we have learned anything from the past two years, it is that nurses may not be getting the recognition and attention that they deserve. There is no better way to truly know what it is like in the shoes of a nurse than asking them yourself. Kathleen Gains, a News and Education Editor, did just that. She asked over 1,500 nurses to share their stories and challenges over the past few years, giving them a voice and an inside look into the healthcare profession. What she found is that nurses are truly struggling. And regardless of specialty, their age, or where they might practice- the feedback was all remarkably similar. As heartbreaking it is to hear of the struggle that nurses face in today’s world, it is important to know those key contributing factors which may help in providing resources and change in a positive way to the nursing profession. Gains pointed out that key issues these nurses felt like needed to be addressed, were issues related to the patient to nurse ratios, equal pay for staff, no hazard pay for the global pandemic, not feeling like there was appropriate backup and being unable to request sick days, days off or even simply taking breaks during the day (Gaines, 2022). With these struggles that Nurses are facing and have been facing, there is also hope in their messages. Things can always improve and get better if there is a willingness for change. My hope is that things will get better and that the voices that need to be heard, will be heard. I know that change does not always happen overnight, but if there is a willingness each positive step forward makes a difference. Going into the nursing profession, I feel a little nervous to be honest. But I know that my voice matters, my opinions matter. I believe that striving to improve in the areas where healthcare is lacking will have a significant impact on patient care. I believe as nurses our greatest purpose and mission is to provide the absolute best care for those in need. For those reading this blog post, your voice matters. Stand up for what is right and encourage change.
