You graduated six months ago from an AD nursing program. You are told that you would have at least a full year of training before you are put in the charge position. Tonight; however, the two other RNs called in sick and you are left in charge. Normal staffing is 3 RNs, 3 LPNs, and 3 UAPs. You are the only RN, and have 3 LPNs and 3 UAPs but feel you need additional help since you are short 2 RNs. The only help you can get is from the OB unit. They are not busy and the supervisor is able to send two UAPs from OB to the surgical unit to help out. It was not what you really wanted, but you feel that you can handle the responsibility. One of the UAPs from OB, Hanna, informs you that for the past several years she has worked only in the newborn nursery and does not know anything about the care of adult clients. She is also afraid that she might catch some disease from the adults that she would take back to the babies. If the OB unit becomes busy she is required to return to that department to work. You ask Hanna, “What do you feel you are qualified to do on the surgical unit?” In response Hanna crosses her legs, folds her arms across her chest, puts her head down, and mumbles under her breath, “A lot more than a new “know it all” RN like you!” D: Describe the specific situation E. Express your concerns about the action S. Suggest other alternatives C. Consequences should be stated.
