Assess the Situation based on the case scenario: Ariel enjoys her work as an RPN in a long-term care agency. She devotes herself to her clients and is frequently commended by residents, families and the interprofessional care team. Shannon is an RPN on a different unit than Ariel in the same long term care agency. Shannon and Ariel often have morning coffee together. During coffee one morning Ariel tells Shannon that she is “getting grief” from other unit staff about her card playing with a group of residents. She explains that she is regularly invited, by a group of residents, to play cards during lunch hour. These residents really look forward to this time. She does not see why people have anything to say about what she does on her own personal time. She sees part of her role as enhancing the quality of life for the residents and, after all, her lunch break is her personal time to spend however she likes. Just yesterday, Shannon had overheard a comment in the locker room from another staff member about residents who were complaining about “extra time” being spent by some of the nurses playing cards with a group of residents but she did not know which unit or nurse was being referred to.
