This case study is on OCD chapter. Working in your groups, please respond to the following case study: Jasmine is a 23-year-old first semester nursing student who visits the college health center. She shares that, before an exam this semester, she experienced sweating, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, and the sensation of her heart being “in her throat.” She found out later she got a “D” on the exam. This alarmed her. She says, “I’ve always been an A student.” The symptoms scared her so much that over the next month, she began studying all night for fear of failing another exam. She would write out flash cards and do them obsessively. She recorded the lectures at school and doesn’t listen to anything but them. She studies every free minute she has and has stopped exercising or seeing her friends and family. Every time she goes into the classroom, she has tightness in her chest and her heart starts pounding. She feels herself breathing faster, starting to sweat, and sometimes she is so upset she just wants to “run away.” “Whenever I think about taking the next exam, I think I am going to throw up”, she says. She starts to cry and says “I don’t think this is anxiety. I think I may be sick.” Questions Identify all of the symptoms that may indicate Jasmine has anxiety. What type of therapy/activities could help Jasmine with her thinking. What can the nurse do to help with her compulsive behaviors? Which medications might be ordered for Jasmine short erm? Long term? Discuss benefits of these medications and side effects.
