For this project, you will create a PowerPoint presentation that illustrates your unique perspective of how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs concepts apply to a surgical patient. All levels of Maslow’s pyramid should be examined in the presentation. This should highlight how the patients’ needs are being met from the pre-operative area, intra-operative area, and post-operative area and through recovery. To start, you should begin by “creating” your surgical patient. Who is your patient? What is their background? Why are they having surgery? Next, decide what type of presentation you would like to create and insert into your PowerPoint. Be as creative as you want. There must be some type of presentation within the PowerPoint. Here is a few options to choose from: Podcast: discuss the patient and then relate the patient’s experience to the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy Pyramid. Put the podcast (audio) right into the PowerPoint slide. Voice Over/Interview: interview a “patient” and ask questions about the patient’s journey in a respectful, sensitive manner. Be sure to relate the questions back to Maslow’s pyramid. Voice Over/Transcription: present your PowerPoint but be sure to include the transcript of an interview with the surgical patient within. If you have another way you want to approach the project, please reach out to your instructor for approval. Be sure to use APA formatting to include references and in-text citations (when appropriate). Tips: Start at the bottom of the pyramid. Physiological needs: air, water, food, shelter, sleep, clothing, reproduction. Think about kind of (s) you could ask a patient getting ready for surgery about these needs. For example we always ask “when was the last time you had anything to eat or drink?”. This helps us to gather information not only for anesthesia but also tells us if they have met this need. It could also be more casual “how did you sleep last night”. Then you will want to explain why it is important that the physiological need is met for the surgical patient. Once you complete the first one, you will move up the pyramid while moving through the phases of surgery. What level did the patient start at, what level are they after each phase?
