Are there any similarities and/or differences between available sources or alternative options? If so, please state the reasons why this may be the case. For this week’s discussion, I am going to shine a light on Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is “a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling” (Schizophrenia – Symptoms and Causes, 2020). Dealing with this mental disorder can take over you’re thinking and the way you behave. Some public financing resources that are available to individuals with this particular mental condition are not only hospitals but also community support groups. There is also the PAN Foundation. According to research, the PAN Foundation is “a program, which will health economically vulnerable people with schizophrenia pay for their medications. PAN is also launching a new partnership with the Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance, which will connect patients with essential support services” (PANS Foundation, 2023). This funding will be beneficial for this vulnerable population because they will not only get assistance with the needed medication but also be able to get ongoing support and treatment. The requirements for this public funding resource are “getting treatment for schizophrenia, having Medicare health insurance that covers the qualifying medication or product and having an income that falls at or below 400% of the federal poverty level.” (PANS Foundation, 2023). If the patient does not fall into the requirements for the PANs requirements they will not be eligible for the services provided. Alternate funding for care for those that have this mental illness is NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). The NAMI “are here to provide you with support for you and your family and information about community resources” (National Alliance on mental Illness, 2023). Being able to reach out for care and be given direction is also beneficial for those with mental illness because most will not know where to start. Really being able to see the services that are out there is really a great thing.
