Are there any similarities and/or differences between available sources or alternative options? If so, please state the reasons why this may be the case. I selected depression as my mental illness of choice for this discussion because it can happen to anyone at anytime. Depression can develop from stressful events, family history, illness, loneliness, etc. Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in the United States with 18.5% of adults experiencing symptoms of depression in 2019(Villarrola & Terlizzi, 2019, para 3). Medicaid is one public financial resource available providing health insurance for low-income families, pregnant women and children, and individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Medicaid provides access to therapy, rehabilitation, and other essential services to treat depression. Another is Medicare which offers health insurance if over the age of 65, have a disability or have End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicare helps cover outpatient, inpatient mental health care and prescription drugs needed to treat depression. Individuals have to meet the eligibility requirements to received financial assistance for these mental health services under both. One method of alternative funding I found for treatment of depression is crowdfunding. “Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or enterprise by collecting small amounts of money from numerous people, typically via online platforms. In the last decade, crowdfunding for medical expenses has gained popularity as well, especially in the United States.”, (Lubloy, 2020, pg. 2). Although someone with depression typically will choose to isolate over publicly broadcast their struggle, crowdfunding could help them get treatment services without everything coming out of their pocket or in scenarios where they can’t afford any services on their own. Limitations could be based off the person’s ability to effectively promote their project. Another method of alternative funding for depression is services given by non-profit organizations. I found locally the Mental Health America of South Carolina (MHASC) that offers evidence-based programs to help improve depression patient’s quality of life. It is available for children and adults with no specific limitations. SCIENCE
