Since health promotion and disease prevention improve quality of life, reduce disease and increase longevity, it is important to understand how everyone can reach their personal health potential. Different theories and models have been developed in order to better understand what motivates individuals to engage or not engage in healthy behaviors. The Health Belief Model (HBM), the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and the Health Promotion Model (HPM) all rely on some basic tenets. The first is a belief in one’s own ability to reach the set goal, self-efficacy. Next, the perceived threat of an undesirable outcome if the behavior is not changed. And lastly, the estimation of health benefits must outweigh the inconvenience and unpleasantness barriers for the behavioral changes to become consistent (Murdaugh et al., 2019). A study in Canada used the HBM as a framework to understand perceptions and responses to Covid-19 in relation to health beliefs and behaviors. The researchers used a weblink that circulated surveys on Facebook and Twitter to recruit participants for the study and to gather information about the primary drivers behind behavior uptake of mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination compliance (Bechard et al., 2021). The HPM reminds me of the patient care concept maps we made in nursing school and is the only model that does not have a perceived threat as a motivating factor for behavioral change. I prefer to help patients focus on small goals that can show results immediately so the behavior is more likely to be repeated. While working in critical care examples of goals for patients could include decreasing supplemental oxygen, extubating, maintaining airway, and performing incentive spirometry.
