Reply to this post giving an account of Dexa scan in women health My research topic is Bone Health Screening in women over 50 in my community. Current national guidelines are to have a DEXA scan to establish bone health in all women over 65. That is a 15 year disparity where menopause is dropping estrogen levels and impacting overall bone health at the same time women are aging and it is more difficult to make lifestyle changes that would ultimately assist in preserving bone health and preventing bone loss. Pharmaceutical options are available, as are supplements but some only hold on to the bone that is left (example: Fosamax), while others that do regrow bone (example: Forteo) are very expensive and take up to 2 years of therapy to improve overall bone health. Making adjustments to a healthy lifestyle is much easier to do the younger you are. Increasing weight bearing exercise, supplements, and changing to a healthier diet can be done in addition to pharmaceutical treatments. If we screened women at 50, like colonoscopies, we would give them 15 years to make changes and improve their overall bone health during those years instead of waiting until they are 65 to start screening and implementing change. The methods of research that I have been doing have included demographic data research on my community – including using the Healthy People 2030 website to identify my topic, and US Census to identify specific data about my community. In addition to those websites I have used a survey/informant interviews of clinic patients identifying women over 50 and if they have had a DEXA, if they are treated for bone health, if the PCP offered a screening and if the results were within normal limits or not, for my first 15 hours of research. For my second 15 hours I am going to do a follow up survey that identifies the age range from 50-65 specifically with the same questions as well as continue my survey from the first round of data gathering. I am also going to do a brief windshield assessment that identifies women >50, out in the community and availability of activity locations like walking paths, pickleball, tennis, etc. I am also thinking about doing a grocery store scan of healthy foods in carts and investigating the supplementation aisle for types of activity. Pulling all the data together I hope to make a case for earlier education and scanning to prevent loss of bone health during the critical menopausal years of 50-65. Reply to Thread
