Case Study 1 Using the information below in case study 1, answer the following questions: In the community of Shepparton, there has been many identified situations of families with children of varying ages and aged pensioners who are living on or below the poverty line. This has been identified by local schools, where children are coming to school without the basics – food, drink, school items, wearing the correct uniform etc and therefore are at a disadvantage in their learning and being able to make friends without children. Local emergency services have identified there have been more callouts to elderly persons in their own homes requiring medical help as they are unable to get to, or have the means to get to a medical centre to get help with medical problems before they escalate. The government structure in place to support those who need it most appears to take money from one pool and add it to another pool without actually addressing the real problems. This has a negative effect on those requiring the assistance as the money received doesn’t cover the basic needs, pushing these people / families well below the poverty line. Money appears to be being put into education as such, but not to support those families who are unable to have the funds to get their children the things they require for school. Brad is the leading community development worker, currently working with a small group of community members in an attempt to address the issue. He is finding it difficult to facilitate effective group meetings as the members have differing opinions on the strategies that should be used to try and recruit more community members. In addition to this, a couple of the group members speak English as a second language and do not contribute as often as other members. Brad and his team are trying to persuade the Local Government to alter the current systems in place. The main change they are wanting is for the Government to allocate more funds to those families who are evidently living on or below the poverty line. a) Identify at least two (2) relevant agencies which could assist the resolution of the poverty issue in the community. b) Identify two (2) actions Brad can take to try and overcome group conflict and address the issues with language barriers. c) Identify at least four (4) relevant legislations Brad will need to abide by as a community development worker. d) Identify and provide a brief explanation of a type of work model that could be used by Brad and his group to assist in gaining Government support and approval for more funding to families in need.
