Post a thoughtful response to a colleagues’ initial postings. Responses to colleagues should be supportive and helpful (examples of an acceptable comment are: “This is interesting – in my practice, we treated or resolved (diagnosis or issue) with (x, y, z meds, theory, management principle) and according to the literature…” and add supportive reference. Avoid comments such as “I agree” or “good comment.” Minimum of one (1) total reference: one (1) from peer-reviewed or course materials reference per response Please reference your response with your response with no later than 5 years and link to doi article In this week’s discussion board post I will explain the similarities, differences and importance of a lobbyist and an advocate. I will also discuss how *** lobbies or advocates for health care policy. A lobbyist is defined as professional advocate who attempts to influence political decisions on behalf of a certain group or organization (Mason et al., 2021). An advocate is someone who will support and defend either an individual or organization for their best interest. A lobbyist and an advocate are similar in that they are both supporting and speaking out against a certain issue, individual or organization. They also both play a role in policy making. The difference between the two is that all lobbying is advocating, but not all advocating is lobbying. Most individuals get involved with lobbying because they what to initiate change (Mason et al., 2021). Lobbying involves influencing legislation for policy changes of a specific interest (Mason et al., 2021). Both lobbying and advocacy are important because they are both defending a certain individual or organization for their best interest. The purpose of The Joint Commission (TJC) is to improve healthcare for the pubic continuously by evaluating different health care systems and ensuring that they provide safe and effective care to patients (Wadhwa & Huynh, 2022). TJC advocates for patient care and safety by establishing specific standards and quality measures for healthcare facilities to be accountable for. TJC offers accreditation to healthcare organizations if they have been deemed compliant with their standards and quality measures (Wadhwa & Huynh, 2022). In conclusion, lobbyists and advocates both play an important role in policy making but have differences in their role. TJC is an organization that advocates for patient safety by evaluating health care organizations and holding them accountable to specific standards and quality measures. Reference Mason, D.
