Reply to this post giving an account for how health care needs are delivered in the school health system. This week’s special population we focused on was the care of the school population. We learned throughout our reading that population health nursing in schools provides opportunity to promote health and prevent illnesses in children and their families. We were prompted to look up the schools/district that we live in and research what information they provide. Below is my response to this week’s discussion prompt. I currently live in Columbus, Ohio. There are numerous school districts in the area. Some are better than others. Before moving to my current location, I was able to research some of the different school districts and was able to make an educated decision on where I would like my children to attend school. As community health nurses, care of the school populations is of high importance. Within the Canal Winchester school district there are individuals who serve as Health Service staff and administrators. These individuals work closely with the families and students of the community. This group of individuals maintain up to date communicable diseases, health education, and immediate needs for the students during the school day. The health service staff also help with additional resources and outside health services ranging from preventative, health services, health promotion information, and treatment for health concerns. (Health Services, n.d.) Within this school district there are health nurses and health aids who are assigned to each school. There also is a website for the school of this district and within this website there are additional resource links, a parent portal and info center, links for health forms, general health information, and links for prominent illnesses that are in the area and information on when to keep your child or children home. There is also a list of communicable diseases that the parents should notify the schools of if a student has been in contact with and has the possibility of getting other students sick. (Health Services, n.d.) A well-coordinated school health program should consist of sufficient health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, a health and safe environment, health promotion for students and school staff, family and community involvement, counseling, psychological services and social services. There also should be a focus on the prevention of illnesses, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, the prevention of injury, prevention of bullying and violence, and the prevention of suicide. Within the school district that I live in, it seems as though they provide all these things and more to the children of our community and schools. (Clark, 2015)
