Can you help me summarize this blog
Can you help me summarize this blog post and list 3 important points? Advocacy in Healthcare Blog As nurses we often encounter people in some of the most stressful and confusing times of their lives. Navigating all of the new information and decisions can be very overwhelming and patients often turn to us for guidance and clarification. Our patients also rely on us to ensure that they are receiving the best care possible. We often have more exposure and experience and know when to ask the providers for further intervention. Nurses are there for the patients best interest and the patients alone. This means we often have to advocate for them to doctors and even family members. I once had to advocate for my patients who had expressed many times to both her family and I that she wished to be DNR. When the time came and she was starting to go her children were adamant that her code status was changed to full code. I was able to advocate, with the help of the doctor, for her to her children. End of life care is an emotional time but I was glad I was able to let her pass in dignity as she wished. Advocacy in nursing encompasses many things. We are responsible for maintaining patient privacy, providing information related to treatment, encouraging patients to make decisions without judgement or biased guidance, and many other things. We spend lots of time establishing trust with our patients and their families and we can use that relationship of trust to advocate for what is best for the patient. Advocating for patient can have positive and negative outcomes for the nurse themselves but advocacy only has positive outcomes for patients. These positive outcomes include, “improving patient safety and quality of care, development of a sense of self-determining and empowering, improving collaboration among patients, families, and the healthcare team,” (Abbasinia et al.,2020 ) and many other vital parts of the healthcare process. I think sometimes when we get worn down as nurses we forget the importance of our role. Advocacy is one of the keystone roles of a nurse and fulfilling that role not only betters the quality of our patients lives but also allows us to feel more fulfilled. This is one of the many positive outcomes that come out of being an advocate for nurses. Having a trusting relationship with your patient and sticking up for what they need and want allows nurses to feel like an important part of that patients care team. Unfortunately, advocacy can also have some negative impacts on the nurse who is acting as the advocate. Sometimes egos get in the way of seeing that the nurse was just doing their job and protecting the patient and colleagues can see that nurse as troublesome and aggressive. Just remember that we are there to provide the patient the best care we can and advocacy is a vital part of that process.
