Can you help me summarize the blog
Can you help me summarize the blog below by listing at least three important points from the content? The price of prescription medications has continued to increase over the years causing financial burden or forcing people to choose between their treatment or putting food on the table. Even with insurance, prescription drugs and other forms of treatment are still unaffordable leading to financial burden. “This is the case in the United States, where there are no regulations to control prescription drug prices and no enforceable mechanisms for value-based pricing” (Vincent, 2020). It’s sad how much pharmaceutical companies will take advantage of the need for certain medications. They know that patients and their family would be willing to pay any price for a lifesaving medication. One such patient experiencing this is Miles Bowman. He has been dealing with a type of blood cancer for about 8 months. He has been in and out of the hospital multiple times and is on many different types of medications. The most recent medication needed to help prevent his body from rejecting his bone marrow graft costs up to $8,000 per pill and it’s something he’ll need daily. Due to this financial burden, the family has now posted their Venmo page in hopes to alleviate some of this financial burden for Miles to receive this important medication. Many patients and families like Miles experience financial toxicity which is defined as “economic consequences of medical treatment; financial burden or financial stress is a common concern during cancer care” (Mayo Clinic, 2022). Patients experiencing financial toxicity sometimes will skip tests and appointments, skip their medications, or split their dose, and refuse recommended treatment. Part of having a right to healthcare needs to include the right to fairly prices medications to meet those healthcare needs. “Although nations recognize the major problems posed by high prescription drug prices, little has been accomplished in terms of regulatory or legislative reform because of the lobbying power of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry” (Vincent, 2020). The price of prescription drugs is much higher in the United States as compared to other countries. The U.S. plan for the price of a drug based on its’ value and because of this, medications can be priced at higher levels. The government needs to step in and cap prices of needed, lifesaving medications at an international level. Another such problem is that physicians will get reimbursed more when they decide to choose more expensive drugs even where there is a cheaper alternative. Part of this medication reform is to also reform reimbursement, so the medication administration price is fixed. People shouldn’t have to choose between buying groceries and their lifesaving medication. Families shouldn’t have to experience that level of financial burden to prolong life. Everyone has the right to live, which should mean the right to healthcare and the right to needed medication.
