In 2018,I was living in Barrie. Small quiet town, I was hurt during martial arts and needed surgery. I was alone here in Canada and a young nurse from a hospital was assigned to help me recover from major surgery. Despite being young, I had a number of chronic health conditions. Despite being on pain medication, I experienced a lot of pain during her shift. The nurse assessed my vital signs and noted that my blood pressure and heart rate are high. The physician changed my pain medication after she notified him, but my condition did not improve. When she got frustrated and started wondering if she was missing something or doing something wrong, she was very confused and made me worried about her lack of knowledge and scope of practice. I was quiet quite upset and frustrated. Reflecting on this situation, I could reframe my thinking to focus on what else I could do to help the patient manage their pain and improve their condition. Instead of feeling frustrated and thinking that I am missing something, I could approach the situation with a more curious and investigative mindset. I could ask questions, gather more information about the patient’s condition and collaborate with the healthcare team to explore different treatment options. To facilitate future action, I could seek feedback from my colleagues on ways to improve my assessment skills and pain management strategies. I could also continue to educate myself about pain management and treatment options, and stay up to date on best practices in nursing care. I learned that pain management is a complex issue and that it is important to take a holistic approach to care. I also learned the importance of effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team in order to provide the best care for the patient. I can use this experience in my nursing practice by incorporating what I have learned into my approach to pain management and patient care. I can continue to seek out opportunities to learn and grow as a nurse, and use my experience to guide my future practice. Additionally, I can share my experience and knowledge with other nurses to help them provide better care for their patients. I would use this experience to improve my nursing practice by taking a patient-centered approach and ensuring that all patient needs are met. I would also prioritize communication and make sure that all team members are aware of patient concerns to ensure that appropriate care is provided. 1. How can I reframe and do things in the future? 2. How can I facilitate future action? 3. What did I learn from this experience? 4. How can I use this experience in my nursing practice? Durrant, M.
