comment on this reflection My reflections from this weeks reading come from chapter 13, “Managing your career”. This chapter follows steps of beginning the interview process, post interview and learning to decline positions as well as preparing your resume. Although I am just beginning my career and learning to gain skills and increase knowledge, this reading has me reflecting on my quest to find my first nursing position. I chose the hospital I work at in my first month of nursing school- I was coming up with a list of all the residency programs I could apply to, and my workplace now was always my number one. I knew this place was home for me for a few reasons, first because of their new grad program, I knew I would have the resources, the education and the people around me to guide me into nursing, second- I knew I wanted a fulfilling career and not just have nursing be a profession. Working at this hospital comes with great opportunities, endless mentors, and resources that can support furthering my education and its wanted I wanted for my career goals. Reading this chapter took me down memory lane of how I prepared for my interview- I spent time on researching top 100 nurse interview questions, I went through them everyday for 2 months, I researched the hospitals goals and values to make sure they aligned with mine, I bought a new outfit for the interview, and prepared my self as much as I could. Before I went for my number one job position, I applied to 2 other places just to see if I fit somewhere else, or if a major city hospital with a 6 month training program was really for me- plus it gave me an opportunity to speak professionally and answer nursing interview questions. My resume and cover letter were ready, I made copies to bring to all the interviews and I wrote thank you cards to those I interviewed with. However, after those 2 interviews, I knew those places were not the right place for me. I waited for a few months to hear back from my current workplace for THE interview. I was ready- resume, outfit, questions were reviewed, I showed up an hour early to prepare. I looked the part and thought I could act the part- but the second I walked into the interview room, my mouth went dry, I couldn’t swallow, I couldn’t breath and I was sweating. I instantly blacked out and before I knew it- the interview was over. I left without remembering anyones names so I couldn’t sent a post interview thank you and I felt like I bombed the interview even though I prepared so much for it. I cried the rest of the day, I had a pity party with my nursing friends because I had let this opportunity slip through my fingers due to nerves and lack of self confidence… The next morning, I got a call with the job offer and again, I blacked out and couldn’t believe I got the job. After reading this chapter, I look back on those months of agony, waiting for the interview, preparing for the interview, thinking I bombed it and all the emotions that came when I received the call- I felt so proud, proud that I made it through school and that I got a job offer in place where I am meant to be- It was quit the ride and I’m so glad to be working where I am.
