Adjust automatic marking as read setting Interoperability is defined as “the ability of two entries, human or machine, to exchange and predictably use data or information while retaining the original meaning of the data” (Hebda et al, 2019 pg.450). Despite new technologies and advances in healthcare today many providers, report that data exchanges do not occur in organizations (Walonoski et al, 2018). Limited interoperability makes for challenges within health care systems and makes it hard for providers to see the patients “whole picture”. At my place of work interoperability is an issue. Many systems need to be improved upon. This is the thought however and we are currently working on getting a new EHR system with many updates and improved features. One system which is currently well is the results-reporting application. All of our patients’ labs and test are completed and get placed directly into the electronic patient health care record. These tests are reported in a timely manner and get uploaded with status updates. Reference ranges are listed, and a color system allows for a “quick view”. All staff our allow to see all tests completed within the system despite if it was a previous admission or current one. This system allows us medical professionals to see what baseline labs our for patients. A system in which needs the most improvement is the ability to see outpatient providers charting and documentation on care. With my line of work in wound care it would be immensely helpful if we could view wound care centers wound care recs or previous studies completed in reference to wounds. It is not uncommon that patients get multiple studies completed that they previously had done at an outpatient wound care center. It is unfortunate that patients need to go through more testing and procedures such as MRIs to rule out osteo, and PVRs to ensure blood flow when these things just were completed at an outpatient clinic. Some may think we’ll just call for the result and not complete the studies again, we have tried and tried this time and time again. Faxing information and getting wound care orders is just not a timely thing to do, and most of the time it does not happen despite the effort. Walonoski et al, 2018 makes note of this and mentions that lack of interoperability leads to gaps, burden to patients, and immense cost. Electronic exchange of patient information between facilities makes test completed more efficient, makes continuity of care, and reuses medical data (Kopanitsa & Ivanov, 2018). Interoperability improves care of patients and without it, health care systems have significant impacts. Impacts include increased cost, burden, and gaps in patient care (Walonoski et al, 2019). With increasing interoperability in health care, it will help achieve better patient care and outcomes, and decreases the medical professions frustration.
