There are times (the weekend and night shifts) that the hospital staff do not have access to one of us. This makes patient care in regard to wound care up to the nurses and physicians during these hours. We WOC nurses have made an intranet site that nurses and physicians can go on to find recommendations to use for wound care until we get to come assess and make formal recommendations. We also provide continuous education to bedside nurses in regard to pressure ulcer prevention as this is one of our main priorities. The WOC website gives the nurses and physicians a place to review and look at options available for wound care based on the wound care issue ex.) pressure ulcer & stages, wet wounds, dry wounds, diabetic ulcers, venous statis ulcers ect. Our website also includes many algorithms and pressure ulcer prevention guidelines that are helpful to provide the best evidence-based care. We review this information periodically and update information as needed. Health literacy is the ability to receive, understand, and use information to prevent or manage illness (Agner et al, 2023). “Proficient use of health information technology is essential to efficient and quality patient care” (Hebda et al, 2019 pg. 210). Literacy is related to my topic as if health care providers are unable to get to our website or understand the materials provided, this would be of no use to them and the patients. Nurses and physicians need to understand information given to provide patient care and education if we are not around. Nurses are responsible for understanding patients’ health information, they play a vital role in promoting a patient’s health literacy (Yang, 2022). Yang (2022) states “nurses’ health literacy competencies in communicating with patients and providing patient education are professional nursing practice standards and the main competencies that nurses should have (pg. 2) Online resources should be viewed as not accurate until verified as a reputable source (Hebda, 2019) The Health on the Net Foundation ensures quality health information is on the internet through codes of ethics (Hebda, 2019). These certified websites go through expert review processes as well as annual reviews (Hebda, 2019). Viewing websites dates, data collected, and sources is vital in ensuring data is correct and is the best evidence based. Looking for the lock on the URL also may indicate a websites certification by the Health on the Net Foundation (Hebda, 2019). Two websites that provide credible information are Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institute of Health website. Both these websites using the evaluation online health information meet criteria for being reputable. Agner, J., Meyer, M., Kaukau, T. M., Liu, M., Nakamura, L., Botero, A., & Sentell, T. (2023).
