Respond to the following paragraph, including citations and references Scheduling patient care is a complex task to undertake. The person responsible for this task must understand the concept of acuity of care and how it relates to the immediate and long-term physiological needs of each individual client. The scheduler must have a good knowledge of the skill and expertise each nurse possesses. The scheduler must further understand that the various departments such as ED, PACU, Medical- Surgical, and Oncology units each have specific goals and targets related to the delivery of patient care that must be met (Brandenburg, Gabow, Seele, Toussaint, and Tyson, 2015). Huber and Joseph (2022) indicate that the best method for scheduling should be automated, and must provide data-driven targets to ensure sufficient coverage. Additionally, schedules should engage staff members to cover specific shifts related to their area of clinical expertise (Huber and Joseph, 2022, p. 434). We must also take into consideration the concepts of fairness where all team members should have a workload that is realistic and not overwhelming (Brandenburg et al., 2015; Huber and Joseph, 2022). This indicates that the scheduler should be an individual who has a good knowledge of the organization within which they are employed. The scheduler should also have a good knowledge of the personal needs of those employed within the organization. One way to ensure that there is fairness regarding scheduling would be to utilize best practice guidelines such as those set forth by the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) (2012) Principles for Nurse Staffing. Per ANA (2012) characteristics such as licensure, the nurse’s level of experience, competency with technology and clinical interventions, language capabilities, experience with the population being served (cultural competency), professional certification, and educational preparation should also help to determine who is best suited for the staffing needs required to carry out client care (ANA, 2012, p. 10). The ANA (2012) further states that ” registered nurses should be provided a professional nursing practice environment in which they have control over nursing practice and autonomy in their workplace” (American Nurses Association, 2012, p. 12). I think that utilizing best practice guidelines can help to ensure fairness related to staffing needs. The best person suited for the role should be the one identified on the schedule. Focusing on the concept of acuity regarding clients’ needs will also help to ensure that no one nurse is given too heavy a workload. As future nurses, we should also understand that there is no such thing as a perfect schedule. We might be called upon to pick up an extra shift or an extra client. However, we must be honest and open and not overextend ourselves especially when we are already tired or stressed out. It is ok to indicate that you are unable to handle that client at this time. Balance is not easily achieved, but with honest, open communication I believe that a fair outcome can be achieved. References American Nurses Association (ANA). (2012). Principles for Nurse Staffing.
