Thank you for sharing your reflections related
Thank you for sharing your reflections related to this prompt about how immune systems are very important to our health; select a disease and provide a detailed description of how you would prevent and what kind of environment would you want the person to be in. Your description and example was informative and highlights the major themes. I would like to extend our conversation to the treatment plan and how the clinician would go about introducing and guiding the client through each strategy that has been chosen. Asking questions that seek to understand the role or process a client is experiencing, instead of asking “why” questions, helps the patient feel heard, understood, validated, and cared for; these effective techniques can be used with a wide variety of goals and other issues that people will identify in counseling and seek your professional guidance to practice these strategies and improve their therapeutic outcomes. One topic I would like to bring our attention to in this discussion is the importance of managing expectations. Part of this means teaching our clients that their minds and bodies do not work like amazon prime- they will not suddenly begin thinking and behaving in their preferred ways, or be “cured”, or enter into recovery in two days. These skills take time to learn and effort to practice, repeatedly and in a multitude of situations and environments with a variety of different people. It is critical that people in treatment understand that it takes time to practice and work to maintain. Just as addiction or any other issues patients face did not occur overnight, recovery and improved lifestyle choices will not be an overnight event either. Expectation management is a huge factor in preparing and maintaining patient success throughout the therapeutic alliance. Make sure your patient is not comparing their progress in “chapter one” to someone else’s progress in “chapter twenty”. There were several instances of struggle for the person a patient is idealizing, they just happened at a different time, so your patient did not see what happened behind the scenes for another person in recovery or therapy. If a person tries to compare their progress to someone else’s, they could easily get discouraged; part of a counselor’s job is to help clients understand that other people had to struggle too just like they are. There are an endless number of positive behavioral self control, assertiveness, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, and coping skills that people will gravitate toward; tailoring your approach to each individual will be possible once you have established therapeutic rapport. Like the saying “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”, you can align yourself with a patient and their family members and gain their trust by using the skills we have learned about thus far in the course. Remember that it can be difficult for someone to know what to do or how to handle a situation using positive communication skills, problem solving skills, decision making skills, conflict resolution skills, and coping skills if they have never seen it modeled or practiced it themselves. Patients can learn to control their thoughts and behavioral responses by practicing positive coping skills to reframe negative thoughts and reactions. By offering people a safe place to learn about and practice these and other positive skills, you are equipping your patients with invaluable skills that will transfer to many aspects of their lives. The more coping skills a client has at their immediate disposal, the better prepared they will be to handle a variety of events positively. I appreciate your citation of references that enhances the statements you make and ties your conclusions together- this contributes to the scholarly nature of your reflection and response. Well done! I look forward to your continued participation in the discussion forum.
