By the end of Unit 4 you

By the end of Unit 4 you will meet or exceed the following: uncover personal bias and prejudice by reflecting on your attitudes, beliefs, and values related to mental health/illness; examine ethical dilemmas related to mental health nursing practice; reflect upon personal and societal stigma and barriers that exist within the field of mental health; and, explain the relationship between homelessness, mental illness and incarceration. Mental illness is not something we choose and neither is the impact it has on our lives. 1. The Beginning: Stigma and Stemming the Tide Watch this 1 minute video entitled The Homeless Read Mean Tweets. Stigma, and discrimination that results from stigma, have a profound impact on the achievement of potential. Stigma involves negative beliefs that are carried in our minds and influence how we treat one another. We all experience stigma and we all carry stigma. Like many things in life, the key is awareness and what you do with it. As nurses the need to address stigma is a professional obligation. We have a duty to ensure that our beliefs do not negatively impact the care we provide. And ideally, over time, the negative stigma that we hold will subside and be replaced with the belief that everyone has a place in our communities and all of us have potential and a right to participate. As we have learned, mental illness can impact the way we behave, feel and think; thus understanding the nature of illness becomes imperative as what is seen and experienced can reinforce stereotypes. In other words, when our thinking is altered sometimes we might have disorganized thoughts, demonstrate poor judgment or act aggressively. When we feel afraid, alone or worthless, our ability to engage, laugh and care for others could be altered. When we behave negatively and are hurtful to ourselves or others, we might not be easy to be around. This is why advocacy is paramount in the field of mental health. Enhancing the understanding and consequences of mental illness will help create a more sensitive and forgiving place where we can support and care for one another rather than ostracize and marginalize.
