The program was launched in 2007 to help uninsured residents of South Carolina afford their prescription. Everyone is eligible to join this free program and there are no enrollment requirements. South Carolina Drug Card provides savings up to 80% on some medications. The program requires proof of SC residency and a one-time,20 dollar application fee, once enrolled individuals receive a pre-activated drug card that doesn’t expire. The program is accepted majority retail pharmacies such as CVS/pharmacy, Walgreens, BI-LO, Kmart, Target and Walmart. As a South Carolina resident if I couldn’t afford my medications, I would apply for one of the the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans, also known as Obamacare plans, during the annual Open Enrollment Period which usually occurs from November 1 to December 31 each year. An ACA health plan can help individuals dramatically to reduce medication costs. So, the way it works is an individual in Columbia SC, who doesn’t have any insurance and is paying cash price for medication or using one of the many coupon online resources, can call a local health insurance agency, for instance lourie life health agency is one such agency. The agents there will tailor a health care plan based on the individuals income level and what that individual is seeking in terms of coverage. Individual insurance is carried out through usually through blue cross and blue shield. Medications prices can be cut by up to 80% in many cases and provide cheap out of pocket costs to the consumer than if they would be using a online coupon, i.e. goodrx. If an individual decides not to enroll in ACA open market, due to not working previous year, or significant finical burden and at or below the poverty line, the good news is they can enroll into South Carolina’s Medicaid program, Healthy Connections. It is administered by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) and provides medical services, including prescription coverage, for eligible low-income and vulnerable South Carolina residents. The Walmart $4 Prescriptions program Not having insurance when you need a life-saving medication can put a lot of stress on an individuals and families. Luckily, Walmart has $4 Prescriptions Program, that’s has been serving local communities around the US for the past 10 years. Every generic medication on the list costs 4 dollars, this program has been a huge help to uninsured individuals. Online Resources to Lower Drug Costs Goodrx An online prescription discount site (such as GoodRx) is a trusted online source used by millions of uninsured individuals to find the lowest price for the medication they need specific to where they live. After registering an account at Goodrx, an uninsured individual input their medication (strength, quantity, and dose) into the app or on the Goodrx website and can filter result to see multiple prices at local pharmacies and the lowest overall price. RxAssist Is an Online website sponsored by drug manufacturers that connects individuals directly to pharmaceutical initiated programs that provide free or affordable medicines and co-pay assistance by inputting the medication needed. RxHope Is another online website that connects individuals who have difficulty paying for their medications to major pharmaceutical companies who provide them with medications at no costs. Patients have to initiate the patient assistance process online by inputting their personal information and medication needed but must have a doctor to complete the application. Once a doctor completes the medication order, the drug companies i.e glaxoccline smith, eli Lilly will provide medication at no costs. Adherence
